Public Sculpture: Call For Artist

Project Overview

Create Texas is seeking proposals from experienced and talented artists or artist teams for the design, fabrication, and installation of a sculpture to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. This public art piece will serve as an inspiring and lasting tribute to Dr. King’s legacy, promoting themes of justice, equality, and unity.

The selected sculpture will be installed on a new plaza at the corner of Arbrook Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, adjacent to the Arlington Highlands, in Arlington, Texas.

Budget

The total budget for this project is $75,000. This amount must cover all associated costs, including but not limited to:

-   Artist fees

-   Materials

-   Fabrication

-   Transportation

-   Installation

-   Site preparation

-   Insurance

-   Any other related expenses

Scope and Specifications

-Height: Up to 20 feet tall.

-   Style and Materials: Open to all styles and materials. Artists are encouraged to consider durability, maintenance, and safety given the outdoor setting.

-   Theme: The sculpture should evoke the spirit and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. Proposals should reflect themes such as equality, justice, hope, and unity.

-   Location: The sculpture will be a focal point of the plaza, designed to engage the public and enhance the surrounding environment. Artists should consider the context of the space and how the piece will interact with viewers.

 Eligibility

This opportunity is open to professional artists and artist teams based in North Texas. Artists with prior experience creating large-scale public art are strongly encouraged to apply.

Submission Requirements

Applicants must provide the following materials:

1.  Artist Statement: A brief statement (up to 500 words) explaining the conceptual approach to the project and how it aligns with the theme.

2.  Proposed Design: Conceptual drawings, renderings, or models of the proposed sculpture.

3.  Budget Breakdown: Detailed budget showing how the $75,000 will be allocated.

4.  Timeline: Estimated timeline for the design, fabrication, and installation phases.

5.  Portfolio: Up to 10 images of previous work with descriptions, including dimensions, materials, and project budgets.

6.  Resume/CV: Include relevant experience, exhibitions, and public art commissions.

7.  References: Contact information for at least three professional references.

 Evaluation Criteria

Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

-   Artistic merit and alignment with the theme

-   Feasibility within budget and timeline

-   Durability and suitability for outdoor installation

-   Professional experience and qualifications

 Submission Deadline

All proposals must be submitted by:  March 15, 2025 at 5:00 PM CST. Late submissions will not be considered.

 Submission Process

Proposals must be submitted electronically in PDF format to mark@createtexas.art. If file sizes exceed 10 MB, please provide a link to a downloadable file via a cloud storage service.

 Timeline- RFP Release Date: February 1, 2025

-   Submission Deadline: March 15, 2025 by 5:00pm

-   Selection Announcement: April 1, 2025

-   Project Completion Deadline: April 1, 2026
